Just so you know, I will not be posting any professional or studio stuff for copyright reasons; most of the stuff I put up here will be odd and obscure, usually live and usually crappily recorded and posted for no other reason than I feel like it at the time.
Today's racket was recorded in a small blues club on a hand held tape recorder; hence the total lack of quality.
The subject for today will be "Underplaying".
We've done boring rock guitar with widdly bits last week, but this week we're going to get subtle.
Here's some backstory:
Stevie, my bass player for most of our adult lives tragically developed motor neurone disease a decade or so ago and when he could no longer tour or gig regularly, he assembled a loose bunch of around forty of his favourite British musicians to start what became Sunday Blues, an improv night with different sets of musicians most of whom hadn't played together before, raising money for motor neurone research.
The First Rule of Sunday Blues was "check your egos at the door".
It was all about sensitive understatement and playing with feeling, rather than wanking around and showing off.
Steve hand-picked each line-up from the cream of the session circuit and top bluesmen, such as members of Peter Green's (ex. Fleetwood Mac; you must remember "I Need Your Love So Bad"?) band who regularly played, occasionally supplementing the line-ups with folk from international bands when they toured nearby.
Nobody had to prove anything so we could all chill out and play notes from the heart and the soul, rather than from the penis.
The audience were hyper-critical and anyone who got a little overexcited and showed off would get very short shrift.
The Second Rule of Sunday Blues was that nothing would ever be rehearsed; everything should be improvised on the fly. It was not a jam session; the line-ups were carefully selected to spark off one another and even though the audiences were packed with musicians, nobody was ever allowed to "come up and play". If they were good enough they would eventually get put in a line-up but there was one hell of a long waiting list and very few ever got promoted into the "regulars" (being a regular meant that, if you were lucky, you got to play once every four to six weeks).
You'd walk in and set up your gear, meet the other musicians - often for the first time - and Steve would call out a key and a count-in and off we'd go.
I loved every minute of it. At the end of each number we would all nod and grin like the band in the Muppets. It was just a bunch of "musicians' musicians" getting together to relax and have fun.
This recording is from a night sometime in the late nineties.
The line-up is:
Paul Tinkler: Vocals and rhythm guitar;
Stevie: Bass;
Jason Self: Drums;
Old Dive: Lead guitar.
The song is the old Albert Collins standard, "Cold, Cold Feeling".
For Istvanski: I was playing my custom Strat through the Boogie, Paul was playing his G&L tele through a Fender Bassman.
And in case anyone wonders, the thing Paul yells at me across the stage just before the last guitar solo is "Give it some SEX!" He has a wonderful way with musically descriptive terms.
Here's photo of "beardy twat" period Dive taken sometime around that geological era.

"Give it some sex!" Now that's a command that would be hard to ignore.
This is my kind of blues Dive. Very appropriate for my mood today. I think I would have swooned had I been in the front row for that performance. Now, how can I copy it to my itunes?
You are so good that I absolutely insist you treat us to a (guitar) performance when we come to London. So, how shall we arrange that? Book speakers for our hotel room?
PS I love the beard and the shortish hair. Very sexy.
Heehee. We "youthfully challenged" folk do love the blues, don't we, Mme?
Thank you for being so kind.
I use Twango because (until someone hacks it) it is unrippable. So no iTunes. If I remember, I'll put together a CD of my crap for when we meet in the summer.
As for the "shortish" hair; it is now "baldish" and decidedly unsexy.
Baldish is ok. M.B has a cute balding bit at the back of his head.
The CD would be fabulous! Thank you, thank you.
You see, I'm turning into a groupie. Hee hee.
My pleasure, Mme.
And I'm sure Monsieur will not thank you for releasing that particular little gem into the interweb. Hee hee hee. When we meet, we can compare bald patches (not you, of course)!
well done, sugar!extremely well done! xox
(delish looking beard, too)
Oh, God, the beard. How awful it was.
I think Thursdays will now be my favorite day of the week--I love these recordings, Dive. The group is great, but your guitar solos are REALLY great. And the beard is nice, too.
Robyn, you are too kind. I like Thursdays, too because I work from home and have my Japanese lessons in the evening; posting old crap is just a bonus.
he he from the penis. Funny. True.
I still don't have sound so am amusing your music is superb. The photo is fab. Quite a looker. Now i shall share a penchant with you: grow the beard back, grow the beard back! Oh yes.........mmmmmmmmmmmmm beards.
he he that's meant to be assuming of course, not amusing!! Too many s u and m in one sentence. Quite threw me. And amused me.
"Amusing" was much better, Lynn.
And whenever I have a beard, all the women hate beards, yet whenever I shave it off they all love them.
I think there's a conspiracy.
I will stomp my feet and pout for weeks if you do not send me a copy of that CD.. DO YOU HEAR ME? WOW is about all I can say. Now if I can be a bit picky, more Dive less other people, Wink, Wink!
You are so talented, Dive. Great racket, indeed. Somehow it won't slide into iTunes so I'll greatly look forward to the CD.
Ripper, old son ! Let's have more when the time comes.
You must have tinkered with the sound quality because it sounds pro recorded from here. Beautifully played Dive. :) Did you do this for a living before? Get famous?
Prudence, when I put something together in the summer for Madame and Monsieur I'll be sure to email you so I know where to send a copy.
But only because we love the same music and I respect your musical opinion so highly; nobody else is getting one. Hee hee.
It certainly won't slide into iTunes, Monsieur. Deliberately so.
Next week I think may be acoustic delta blues; something a little different.
Shan: always the sideman; never the bride. It's MUCH nicer and far more profitable that way. Playing with and for "the famous" is great; I can't think of anything that gives me more of the creeping horrors than the thought of losing my anonymity.
And there was no tinkering with the sound. It was just a little hand-held stereo DAT recorder; taking chunks of the studio to gigs is a real pain.
WOO HOO! I am so excited! Thanks Dive. I feel so special.
You Are so special!
Wonderful, Dive, real quality.
Subtlety, compassion as well as excitement conveyed in the playing. I can see why the regular musicians were selected the way they were.
Unlike those Medway yobs I've just reviewed over on mine. You mate hate them.
(Thanks for the equipment list, BTW. I Look forward to the next instalment.)
"You mate hate them."
Blimey, I did type that too.
Buggered if I know what it means...
Stick Old 55 in from Blind Willies.
Thats a nice guitar sound.
You're looking a tad Eric Clapton there by the way. I'm related to him via marriage; have i shown off about that before? :)
Istvanski: They are great fun! I love stuff like that; people having a good thrash for the sheer, bloody joy of it.
Phil: Nah …
Lynn: No, you haven't. I am so damned jealous. Last time I saw him was one of his blues nights at the Albert Hall. It was wonderful except for all of the no-brain dickheads shouting for Layla.
Hey, ho.
Well to be honest Dive i'm envious of that. I've not seen him live and certainly not met him, he wouldn't know who the hell i am i'm sure! My brother has though and drinks with him sometimes in the pub. Er.. also Paul Weller, though he's not related in any way. Ho hum hey.
Though i wouldn't be too envious, he's not as often in the area to be in the pub as my bro would like. lol. It's hideously tenuous actually isn't it. Oh well we use what we can when we want a bit of showing off. lol!
i am crushed...pru gets a cd and i don't? and i offerd to send ou one that was recorded in our club?
crushed/totally/utterly/completely/crushed
(is it working?)
you, i meant, YOU
(see how crushed i am?)
;-)
xox
Dive Dear - can't hear it so am just going to sulk and drink the rest of the gin that is left in the bottle after my last sulk - an hour ago!!!
Mme B - You've probably heard this but it reminded me - Balding from the front means you are a great thinker, balding from the back means you are a great lover and balding from the front & back means you just think you are a great lover!!!!
Hee hee, Lynn. Use what you can, however tenuous.
But please don't talk to me about Paul sodding Weller. I used to like him until the first Style Council tour. I was up for the tour band when suddenly the dickless little shit gets it into his head to change everything and hire an all girl band.
All very admirable, but the wanker didn't even sound sorry on the phone.
I've not bought any of his stuff since, as I'm a sulky bastard who harbours a grudge for life.
Savannah: We'll see. I have no idea what will even go on a CD yet. I dug out 24 CD's full of crap from the studio yesterday and had a real cringe listening back to some of them. Ick!
And "ou" is somehow cuter than "you" when you're asking for something. Hee hee.
Jules: you're not allowed to sulk as you live in Paradise.
Even if the internet connection is crap and the volcano spits ash into your gin.
I love the baldy joke! I'm definitely a front and back man. Hee hee.
You'll just have to get used to me visiting here again and again Dive. I put the song on while I'm making a coffee or doing something in the computer room. I just love it. The singer is really good too - I like his voice.
As for revealing secrets about M.B - it seems to have gone over his head???
Now Jules - you are simply too much. I can't possibly reveal the truth of those things now can I? You might come down and steeeaaaal my boy away from me. Hee hee. You are in for a treat when you do get your sound on. Old Dive is a match for Clapton I reckon (and I have the Clapton special edition CD).
Hee hee, Mme: Paul does indeed have a lovely voice. he looks, however, not unlike Gimli the dwarf in the Lord of the Rings movies. He's about that tall, too.
Oooh dear Dive the Weller episode does sound grudge-worthy.
Oh well i'll stick with the tenuous Clapton relation i think. lol.
I try to keep my tales of the twattiness of celebs out of my blog, Lynn, as they tend to get litigious about these things.
Suffice to say that some of them are lovely.
But not many …
I don't care what Paul looks like, his voice sort of makes me go all buttery.....
And Bing has jam sessions about twice a month. They play in the basement for hours and hours and then come up and snarf down things like toasted peanut butter and jam sandwiches. I swear they all look stoned...but it is the music, they say....
Bing liked the drums on this one. She said they had just enough "snake" in them to hiss up a bit. What the hell THAT means is beyond me.
Maria: I love a woman who doesn't care what a man looks like. Hee hee.
Bing's right (as always). When you play the music and the intimate interplay between the musicians gets you high.
And I know just what she means about the drums. Like most of the drummers on those sessions, Jason uses vintage jazz kits from the fifties and sixties. Session drummers are ludicrously fussy about snare drums.
