Hee hee. I was wandering around Notre Dame from the front to the river side and these little guys just struck me as funny. There are a couple there that really do look like meerkats. At London Zoo there's a tunnel under the meerkat enclosure and you can pop your head up in a glass dome right in the middle of them. Great fun if occasionally startling.
They sure do, Robyn. Notre Dame has more gargoyles than I've ever seen on a cathedral. I'm sure that when nobody is looking they scamper about and get up to all manner of mischief.
Oh dear, I may have just given Disney an idea for a new movie …
Ah, Robyn, I bow to your superior Disney knowledge. The last Disney movie I saw was the Jungle Book; I had no idea they'd had a go at Hunchback. I'm strictly a Hayao Miyazaki man when it comes to animation.
Love it! They do look like Meerkats! I would love to pop my head up into meerkat land! Oh and the Disney Hunchback did not feature the gargoyles! I will suggest this to my daughter, the animation major!
It's interesting that people see them as animated characters. My first inclination was that they were little meerkat sorcerers, stickin' their little pointy noses from under little hoods in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Ah, Ms.M. Spirited Away is my favourite animation ever. All the marvels of Pixar all blown away by the beauty of the drawing and the intelligence and imagination on display. Plus of course there are no annoying and loud characters constantly breaking into awful pop songs. Disney and Pixar need to sit and watch it and go back to the drawing board.
Neetzy, I'd love to see what she can do with it. These guys are crying out for an animated short.
Speedway, that's much more in the spirit of Notre Dame. Beautiful as it is it has a vibe of strange hidden creatures and sorcery about it. A very un-Christian Cathedral.
Mme, me too. We've had storms and rain for a while here so blue skies would be welcome.
Dive, I think "strange hidden creatures and sorcery" is very Christian, or at least it once was. If you enter any ancient European Christian church you'll find all kinds of dark nooks, crannies and hiding places where the little people aren't allowed to go. The mystery and magic, the sense of the forbidden secret, is what makes them so attractive.
Absolutely right, Petrea. One nice thing about English churchyards is that they are full of yew trees, a lot of which date back to before the Christian era as most of the churches re-used old pagan sites and kept the sacred groves. Yay paganism! Hee hee.
