I liked the look of these thistles in the organic garden in front of City Hall. They were absolutely crawling with bugs and aphids but also with ladybirds making a yummy meal out of the browsers. All the plants in the garden look fantastically healthy; a great advertisement for non-chemical gardening.
Interrupt the food chain by killing the bugs and next thing you know there are no ladybirds, no birds and just a pretty flower in a dead wasteland.
I've not got a macro lens for my new camera yet so I had to stand on the far side of the footpath and use the telephoto for these. As usual, some people stopped and stared at me with dumb, slack-jawed expressions, trying to figure out what I was looking at. Ah, the TV generation; all imagination sucked out of them. Hey ho.

Robyn, I was photographing the thistle and only when I zoomed in did I notice the bugs. The whole garden was awash with ladybirds feasting on the aphids that were in turn browsing the plant stems like herds of teeny tiny cattle. The food chain is a wonderful thing when left to its own devices. A pox on insecticides.

Thank you, Genie, you are too kind. I was very fortunate in the background colour, it being the lovely buttery stone plinth of City Hall in the sunshine, a nice contrast with the purple.
The purple on the thistle is absolutely vibrant! I love thistles. I like non-invasive insects. Don't get me started on stinkbugs.
The purple is so rich in these photos! the textures are sensual, too. And good to hear that Nature's cycle is working.
Too bad the "staring people" don't get it. Maybe some day they will learn to observe the world around them.

Ms.M, I'm not sure I'd want to get too sensual with a thistledown pod. Spiky! The flowers are nice to brush your fingers through though.
I think perhaps when all the televisions in the world fail at the same moment people will start to use their eyes and their imaginations. I think if you lifted the top off most people's heads these days you'd find their brains still wrapped in polystyrene packaging with an unused set of instructions.
Perhaps "sensual" wasn't quite the right word, as, yes, they are spiky. Sometimes after a long day at work, I feel like part of my brain is wrapped in polystyrene :) (and I rarely watch TV)
