What a pity our week of vintage car racing ends with the sad death of America's most famous racing driver and race team owner; the man who drove to second place in the toughest race in the world, the LeMans 24 Hour race; the man who has donated over two-hundred and fifty million dollars to charity (and who will keep on giving long after he's gone), and one of the very few men in history who I would truly rate as gorgeous.
He could also act a bit.I watched Butch and Sundance last night. Today it will be Cool Hand Luke.
It's not given to many to be universally loved and mourned by an entire planet.
Rest in peace, Mister Newman.

As for the back, I'm still hicking about with the aid of a stick but it seems to be on the mend now.
Ah yes, RIP. He was actually a very good actor and one who studied the craft quite extensively, moreso than many who could easily exist in that line from their looks alone! I liked him a lot. Sigh. Why can't we all live forever?

I was really saddened by his passing. I've always thought of him as one of the most decent human beings - especially in a place like Hollywood! And I love the fact that he loved to cook.
I think Cool Hand Luke would be a great choice for today. What a guy. I just watched Rich's tribute—the man was amazing in so many ways. Plus, he WAS pretty, wasn't he?

A great movie, but like taking part in the drinking game when watching Withnail And I it is probably not advisable to go egg for egg against the Man!

I was very very sad to read the news this morning that Paul Newman is no longer with us. There was a wonderful article on him in the Sept Vanity Fair magazine which I have with me and will reread. I think I will do a Paul Newman DVD weekend when I get home. Thinking of the scene of him riding the bicycle to Raindrops in Butch Cassidy makes me want to cry, and I'm not usually emotional. I was lucky enough to see him along with his wife and daughters at a small restaurant in DC in about 1988. No one went up to their table or anything, but the room became absolutely electric as people realized he was there. He was a class act in so many ways, and the world will continue to be a better place for a long time because of all he's done. Sigh.
It sure is a sadder world without him, Katie.
I'm glad to hear that nobody bothered him and his family at the restaurant. He was such a great family man.
I think that I have seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at least ten times and I still crack up each and every time the jumping-off-the-cliff scene plays.

Yes Dive thanks for posting this - I am so sad today. He was not only a sublime actor but the epitomy of a gentleman, thoughtful, generous, unselfish (which in his world is a novelty)and just divine to look at!!!
We have him forever in his movies though and I agree - we all need to watch one today.

Paul was absolutely gorgeous. The best blue eyes in the world! He felt that his good looks were a liability...no one took him seriously. Wouldn't it be nice to have that as a problem? BTW I checked out your Art. You are awesome dude. How can you be so multi-talented...music, art...architecture?
I didn't even realize he was ill. What an extreme shock. I never heard anything but positive about this man and that's pretty dang hard to keep up in the public eye one's whole life. He was truly beautiful inside and out. I'm going to buy his salad dressing more often and hold my fork up to Paul when I eat it. Group Sigh.

My sister adored Paul Newman. His death could be one of the reasons she is still in the psych hospital, hearing her "voices".
I really liked his acting too; I think he was in Papillon with Dustin Hoffman wasn't he?
