Hokay … Let's stick with yesterday's subject of accents.
First up, Maria's comment made me realise I have no idea what a "Prairie" accent sounds like, in fact I am pretty much in the dark about a lot of US regional accents.
She also filled my mind with the image of thousands of bewildered patients wandering the prairie like buffalo, their gowns open at the back, shuffling like zombies and dribbling a little.
But then that may just be what passes for normal in Nebraska.
So here's a little task for you lovely people:
Point me at a movie where I can hear your own regional accent.
F'rinstance: Fargo for Minnesota or Bill and Ted for "San Dimas".
If we all do this it will help when reading one another's posts (or in some cases make it funnier) to try it in the correct accent.
The same goes for the Aussies. The only accent I can pin down is Kath and Kim's and every Aussie I talk to denies they sound anything like 'em. In fact Mme and MB sound just like me so I could probably get away with visiting Adelaide without being called a whingeing Pom.
Here we get to the "cute" in acute accents.
I can't help it but some accents turn me on.
Here are three exotic/erotic accents that have me desperately reaching for something to hold in front of me to cover my stiffy.
Neko Case's redneck, trailer trash cadences. Oooooooooooooooooo. Talk trashy to me, girl. The song is wonderful, too … if you're into songs about murder.
Help me out here please, Colonial people. Tell me exactly where in the US this accent can be found so I can go there and find me a woman.
I've never been able to tie down where this accent comes from but this girl's voice just cups my balls and … er …
Even some English accents get me all tingly. This is the lovely Kate Rusby from "oop north" singing the utterly beautiful Annan Waters. If you only have time to listen to one of these, make it this one. It's simply gorgeous. The way she says "love" just … well … er … I think I'll go have a bit of a lie down.

I sometimes wish I had Professor Higgins' skill :D Love accents, too. For some reason, I always giggle when the I hear French men in films speak English. I don't know why...

The first California accent movie I thought of was The Big Lebowski, mostly because I hear people say dude a lot, not necessarily for the accent. That's a tough assignment! Sorry I'd write more but I'm in bed trying to type on my iPod and it's already taken me 15 minutes to type this much!

Trust me, Aussies DON'T sound like Kath and Kim.
If I did I would go and have my voice box surgically removed.
Here on the prairies, we tend to speak rather plainly and drop our g's. We are walkin', talkin' and goin' easy through our days. We have what is referred to as a "midwestern twang" which is basically just a fine, plain speech with no g's.
Actually, many telemarketing centers are right here on the prairie because our regional accents are considered to be the easiest to understand. We are plain spoken and clear, in general.

Maria: Why can't my country have that attitude to telemarketing? Our own call centres are in either India (luckily based around Mumbai so I can just about understand the accent as I work with people from Mumbai) or Scotland (totally incomprehensible to anyone, including themselves).
This is a tricky one for me as I sort of ebb in and out of all different accents depending on who I'm talking to or what mood I'm in. I actually uploaded a video with my voice narrating but then I couldn't bare posting it because I sound like a nerd in it. Maybe I'll post it anyway so you can hear me speak all kinds of hidious.
I probably sound like Maria(except dingier no doubt) for the most part because I do drop my g's when I'm just talkin'.
Sometimes I ask questions with an upward lilt to them and I sound a wee Brittish. Why don't you let us hear your voice-just put your camera on video and show us around the room or something. :)
I still don't recognize strong accents in your "American accent" clips. It seems more like a tone quality that you are going for there.
I believe "Goodwill Hunting" will give you a taste of a real Boston accent. Mine comes out when I am excited or talking fast. But you should hear my mother! Though she's been in Florida for 14 years, she still drops her "r's" like they're hot potatoes!

Ahh. I do like Kate Rusby's singing. Can't quite make out all of the accent but it is soothing and soft singing.
We'd never call you a whingeing pom when you get here dear. You simply don't have the accent for it - you are quite right!
Kate's a Lancashire, lass, Mme. It's a delightful accent.
And it's great to find somewhere in Australia where I might be able to hide my Pom-dom.
