Webster Goes Bust

"Boobleage."
"Boobelage."
"Boobage."

My last photopost - concerning the innocent pastime of gift wrapping - brought in its wake three contrasting spellings of a word I had not previously encountered.
There it is, up at the top of the post.

All of the relevant comments came from the flower of American womanhood and made me wonder if American women think about boobs as much as English men do.

We on the civilised side of the Pond use "cleavage" for the amount of boob on display, but I must confess a sneaking admiration for this Colonial neologism, particularly that "L" in the middle that hints at the word "wobble."

Strangely, my spellchecker (regrettably based on Webster's gibberish rather than the English language as she is spoke) only picks up the middle one as a misspelling.

So, laydees … tell me more about boobs.

Boobs

I've never understood
the obsession we have
with these pieces
of hormone-filled
flesh and flab
that hang off
the front of females.

I'm with you, Katherine. Mine just kind of grew and have been a part of me along with the rest of my skin suit, like arms and legs. They are just my personal decorations that, along with my wide hips, differentiate me from the boys.

I think "boobleage" is a colloquialism I first heard about 30 years ago. Go to www.urbandictionary.com to be both enlightened and amused (sickened, too). "Boobleage" as yet has no definition, but a LOT of other things do.

Boobies + baubles + bobble + melange = boobleage.

Also, think of the of the lingerie as giftwrapping, too, with presents just for you.

Katherine, those hormone-filled flab-hangers fascinate and delight most of us men (and a lot of weemen, too) from the cradle to the grave.
Yay, boobs!

So boobleage has a history, Speedway? That would explain why my spellchecker recognises it.
I just hefted the relevant volume of the OED off my shelves and can find no trace of boobleage in the real English language … "boobialla", "booboisie" and of course "boobook" (a small brown spotted owl: Ninox novaeseelaniæe, native to Australasia - hence the Kiwi latin name - and also known - to all Terry Pratchet fans - as the "morpork"), yes; but alas, no boobleage.
No doubt its day will come.

And don't get me started on lingerie! A pair of plain, white cotton knickers is infinitely more erotic than all the lingerie ever made. I hate the damned stuff. It ranks second only to the denim skirt (see many a previous rant) as the greatest turn-off a woman can wear.
Ack!

I'm with the others here, and I think you already know quite enough about boobs as it is. Telling you any more would just be like feeding the beast.

Beast? Moi?
And what's wrong with feeding a starving person, Robyn? I'm am terribly boob-deprived.

Beast feeding?

This was a hilarious read, sugar! But, I'm in agreement with Scout, you already know all you need to know about titties/chi chi's/knockers/breasts! *L* xoxoxoxo

Oh and I'm the bad speller of the bunch. I did learn that the pet term "Mamma" evolved from the word Mammary as in the glands that result in boobs. CBS Sunday morning dedicated their Mothers Day show to the subject!

The Online Slang Dictionary gives a few more creative names for boobs including breasticles, chesticles, gazongas, and headlights.
But, Dive, I would imagine you already have quite a bit of knowledge on this subject...

Hahahahaha, Katherine!

Savannah, knowing about stuff and having the opportunity to enjoy it are two quite different things, much to my teeth-gnashing frustration. Hey ho.
xoxoxoxoxo

Neetzy, CBS Sunday Morning sound like they share the same priorities as my post: talking about etymology but thinking about boobs.

Ms.M. As I said to Savannah: knowledge is one thing, experience: quite another. I SO need a girlfriend (and not just for the boobleage).

You want a girlfriend for "educational purposes only"?

Hahahaha Speedway you are the best! If this comment gets through the stupid character check. I am getting too old and blind to read these!

Speedway, we all gotta learn somehow, and I'm desperately uneducated when it comes to weemen. I'm fine with the written but the practical has so far eluded me.

Apologies for having to have that dumb thing switched on, Neetzy, but it keeps the spam away.

I was just thinking that we should all arrange to meet Dive in Indy (since it seems the most centrally located and I'm poor), where we could go all entymological on him with our own private spelling bee. Of course, he would win though.

Indy 500 next year Speedway. I'm on!
I was there once. I have cousins in Zionsville. Dive needs to experience the Indy!

Tempting … but only if we can use the OED and not Webster's abomination.
