Meme-ette

Huge thanks once again to Savannah for this compact and bijou meme-ette.
Were it not for this you would have suffered more crap about boring guitars or moaning about trains.

This meme had lots of rules - or at least it did before it got here, where those things go straight in the bin.
Basically, it's "fess up about six unspectacular quirks of yours."

Easy peasy, I thought. I am probably the least spectacular person on the planet so unspectacular things follow me around like Pigpen's dust cloud.

It's quirks that are the problem.
I'm not the least bit quirky.
I am perfectly normal.
It's the rest of you who are quirky.
In fact some of you are downright weird (I say that in the knowledge than none of you are close enough to punch me).
I mean, I'm a bit anal with my books and I iron my boxer shorts, but that's not quirky; I just like to be able to find what I want to read and to do it in non-wrinkly underwear.

Having spent the whole train journey trying to think of quirky behaviour and coming up empty I shall have to scrape the barrel.

Shit. Where do I start?
Hokay …

1. I never wear any jewellery. No rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings or any of that crap. Just lately I've stopped wearing a watch, too. It always told me things I didn't want to know.
No tats or piercings, either; just the odd scar.

2. As I really can't think of much else I suppose I'll have to include my obsession with lovely straight towels, every piece of cutlery in the correct place (and the right way round) in the cutlery drawer, and if anyone moves something in my house so it's not quite square they're dead meat.

3. I regard this as perfectly normal behaviour but some oddballs amongst you might not:
I hate telephones. I absolutely loathe the fuckers.
For years I wouldn't have one in the house and now I only allow it under sufferance as it's the only way I can get online and work from home.
It stays on mute unless I'm expecting a call from the office, so don't try ringing the smegging thing (I'm not in the directory anyway).
As for fucking mobiles … well, you know my views.
It's bad enough having a fixed telephone at home (it lives at the bottom of the vegetable rack in the kitchen, underneath a cushion in case you're curious); the thought of one that actually follows me around gives me the screaming horrors.

I seem to remember when they first came out, everyone (and this means you; don't deny it) saying "Oh, I'll only use it for emergencies. What if my car breaks down?"
Yeah, right.
"Hi! I'm on the train!"
Bastard! I'll give you a fucking emergency!

4. I'm a pretentious twat with shelves full of lovely, stinky, leather-bound editions of Homer, Virgil, Dante, Milton, Shakespeare, Goethe, all the classics, plus Dickens and lots of good, turgid Russian literature, yet I still read comic books.
I am a huge fan of Love and Rockets.
I've collected it since it started in the early eighties and I regard it as great literature.

5. I loathe television.
Face it; it's crap.
For fifteen years I had a life instead of a television.
Now I have one but only to watch old black and white movies and to play Grand Theft Auto on the PS2 and PS3.
I can watch movies on my Mac so as soon as they come up with a monitor for the PS3 that isn't a television I'll ditch the fucking thing again.

6. I can do "this" with my thumbs.
Cool, huh?
I don't have a video camera so you'll just have to take my word for it.

Whew! That was really difficult. I simply don't have quirks. I am the quintessence of normality (NEVER "normalcy")!

Anyhoo … have a go if you feel like it, you quirky people, you.

Hah! Nothing wrong with hating phones. I refuse to answer ours if it's a number I'm not familiar with, and even then there's a strong chance that I won't pick up. I hate cordless phones and their really shrill, heart attack inducing ringtones. There's no way to stop them ringing.

Mind you, this is all a side effect of my social phobia, which is one of my "quirks".

Yeah,,,it's the rest of us isn't it Dive...o..k.......

You are actually listed in my sidebar as Quirky Dive. Where could i have got that idea, all those months ago when first encountering your blog? Hmm.

The last one made me laff. "This" is very clever indeed, Dive.

sugar, compared to my little list of unspectacular quirks. . .i'm speechless! ;-) xoxox

Betty, I have an old phone which is wired to the wall. I replaced the original one with an ancient seventies "trimphone" because it has a "mute ringer" facility and even if it does ring it is so quiet I usually don't notice it.

Social phobia is a good thing.

Lynn: You're all weird!
Hee hee.
Quirky, eh?
Ha!
As for the thumb thing, you should see it!!!!!

Savannah: I must thank you for saving me from blogger's rot today. I felt so uninspired and then along came Savvy to my rescue.

#6 is amazing. You are so talented, Dive. Now tell everyone how many sets of chopsticks you carry around with you.

dive said...

Hee hee. It's pretty eye-popping, isn't it, Robyn?

And hey! What's wrong with carrying chopsticks?
Those crappy disposable ones are just nasty, so I take a few really nice pairs in a Japanese case.

Quirky? Moi?

If I weren't married to M.B I'd marry you Dive because you iron things (I'm not so fond of ironing things) and you love cleaning (I'm not so fond of cleaning because it kills my back but I do it anyway).
Or perhaps because I'm a social phobic who doesn't like phones either and I want to read all of your books. (Who would do the grocery and new book and DVD shopping?)

I'm not keen on tats or jewellery on men either. I think it is a generational thing. None for them, more for me.

I have a few scars too. Where are yours? How did you get them?

I love straight towels, in fact I spend about 2 minutes several times a day straightening them up after M.B has been playing with them. M.B refuses to return the cutlery to the drawer after it comes out of the dishwasher - that's my job. I wonder why? I have to pack the dishwasher in order too.

I'd need a TV - there are some dramas that I like to watch but I loathe the commercials. But I guess that I can watch movies on my Mac too now. Gosh, I hadn't thought of that! So, I won't need a TV after all. You'll have to do all the radio listening and paraphrase the news for me.

This is just so you know the routine in case M.B goes missing with the luggage on our trip or something.

Hee hee, Mme; what a wonderful and generous thought!
Add to that list the fact that I love shopping, so that's that sorted.
Actually, I'll even take mum out shopping for clothes … though that usually means the two of us wandering around dress shops with mum going "I like that" and me going "No WAY! Shit! That's so seventies!" or simply saying "Brown" and dragging her away from … ew … brown things. She looks good in bright colours; turquoise is good, yet she unerringly heads for things that come straight out of 1973 sit-coms. Blech!

As for scars, I have an entertaining variety. The biggest is from when my appendix burst and I got peritonitis. That's a doozy! It looks like a shark bite. The surgeon must have got his entire head in there to look around.
My favourite is the one where the big tube came out to drain all the cack away. I like to pretend that's a stab wound as that's just what it looks like.
Actually, I suppose that's what it really is, but a very careful stab wound inflicted under general anæsthetic. Hee hee.

Straight towels and neat cutlery. I shudder when I go into some people's houses and the towels are all wonky or -worse still - just draped higgledy-piggledy. What the inside of their cutlery drawers must look like would probably give me a seizure!

As for TV, I'll let you have a portable one in the shed.

A word to Monsieur: Don't go near the luggage carousel!

Your Green Giant comment at Katie's made me chuckle. He lives in France too! Vive le Geant Vert! HOHOHO!

MmeBenaut said...

DIVE - didn't you notice I was wearing beige and brown things on my blog today???????

The TV in the shed is ok. That's where M.B will send me anyway when he is plucked like a plum off that carousel.

I plan to Dive, when we have that coffee. The thumbs trick is a must. Unless it'll make me puke in your coffee? Notice it wouldn't be mine.

I love the alternative Mrs. Dive idea, Mme! What fun. Should the luggage remain intact, i've often though i might like to move in there and read all of Dive's books. Yes i'd need a tv for the news and BBC period dramas. I'd swan around in costume sometimes too, swishing my skirts with a sway of my bustier. How deliciously decadent. By candlelight naturally. I love the towel idea, but would prefer them all to be white. Of course. lol!

Hmmmm...I thought I was quirky until I read this and what you wrote seemed kind of "normal" to me...so I guess I'm not quirky at all.

drats

I can't do "that" with my thumbs but I can do "this" with my upper lip!!!

dive said...

Welcome, Marie!
That Green Giant brought back so many memories!
I'd forgotten about his hearty laugh until you just reminded me.

Mme: Beige and brown are allegedly fashionable but I'm afraid they just remind me of the drearier end of the 1970s.

Lynn: Have no fear; the thumbs thing is not obscene.
And the idea of a deliciously decadent lady in crinolines swanning about the house declaiming from my books is indeed a tantalising one.
I have white towels.

Wow, Shazza! That is SO COOL!
I've never seen that done before!
Hee hee.

I can do that with my thumbs as well, and all the tins in my kitchen cupboards are in line and face the front as well as the beer in my fridge. It doesn't take any longer to do that than to just shove them in so why not look tidy????
OCD runs in the family.
Now wash your hands.

Oh yes. I DO have quirks. THAT'S why I read this bunch. We have quirkiness in common. I do hate phones but only because I don't know how to cut people off and say "I need to get back to my non-phoning now." That is always awkward.
It was funny the other day when the phone rang and my 5 year old said "Mommy the phone is ringing boo-hiss." It made me laugh so hard because I didn't realize I always say BOO-HISS when it rings. BAH!
As for the OCD. I only wish I had a touch more of that if it could make me tidier. I do have the handwashing thing going on a little strong though. I'd probably prefer to wear gloves at all times, truth be told.

dive said...

OCD?
Obsessive? Moi?

Boo-Hiss! Hee hee, Shan. I shall add that to my list of phone-expletives.
At least I can use that one in polite company.

The gloves thing is just kinky, though (OW!).

I have always wondered what happened to Bing's long lost twin brother and now, there you are in England.

Both musicians, both droll, both weird about cutlery, towel folding and ironing...

Might you have an aversion of crumbs on the counter too? Toast crumbs in particular?

dive said...

AUGH! Toast crumbs!!!!!!!They're so GREASY!
And what are they doing on the counter?
Even worse is when people (naming no names) put their toast-crumb covered plate in the sink without having first swept those pesky crumbs into the bin.
Grrrrr …

Hee hee.
