Holy Crap!
Cheese, Louise, that was a mistake.
Not because of the spiders … As any really long term blogpals will know, there are no spiders in my attic because somewhere out there in the dark forest of rafters lurks The Thing That Eats Spiders.
I have never met The Thing That Eats Spiders but I hear it sometimes.
And even during harvest time when the rest of the house is overrun by the bloody things there are never any spiders in the attic, so I know it's still creeping around up there on however many legs it has, snuffling and crunching things-arachnid in the gloom.
No, the thing that I found in the attic was in one of many boxes that have remained taped shut for decades, moved from house to house and put up in attics with the faded and enigmatic legend "STUFF … DO NOT THROW OUT!" scrawled across the top.
Rainy weekends occasionally lead me up into the warm darkness (scuttling, snuffles and crunching sounds notwithstanding) to explore these time capsules.
And in this one I found a boxful of cassette tapes.
I've said it once, but it bears repeating: Holy Crap!
Recorded on one of the very first crappy little hand-held portable cassette machines are tapes of my kiddie rock band from the early seventies playing Yes and Focus songs, tapes of sanity bands through the centuries, four and eight track masters, country bands, heavy metal bands, jazz-rock bands, a snapshot of the decades that Dive forgot!
So …
I lugged the big old monster mastering machine from the studio down to the dining room, plus several more shiny black boxes with flashing lights and lots of knobs.
I hunted through cases of leads to find ones with the right connections.
And I started the painstaking task of digitising my past …
Don't get excited; this job will take at least a year (I'm not kidding) and the sound quality of the early stuff is execrable at best.
Through a wall of hiss, static, tape-wobble, flutter and general sonic crap I can just make out our eleven-year-old drummer going apeshit while kiddie Dive wails solos all over the place.
The things were recorded in St.Luke's Church in Beccles, Suffolk by a twelve-year-old kid who I can hear between songs trying to chat up the singer's girlfriend. Let's just say that he would not be going on to a career in the recording industry.
Those tapes are never going to be restorable enough for public listening, but they got me all nostalgic.
Where on earth are those people now?
Other than the bass player - who is something high-ranking in the Royal Navy and was last heard of living in the Caribbean, the bastard - I've not seen nor heard from any of them since around 1974.
Sheesh!
Anyhoo, there's loads more crap in there. Some of which - if I'm feeling particularly masochistic - may well end up on a Thursday Racket.
Most of today has been spent either sighing wistfully, shouting sudden expletives or laughing like a loon. It's been fun and I've only done three cassettes so far (there are hundreds).
I'm currently digitising a heavy rock gig from 1984. The quality is crap - a cassette recorder plonked on the floor at the side of the stage, so far from the monitors that all you can hear is the backline and a very, VERY faint vocal reflected back from the hall but it's got me grinning like a loon and dancing round the room.
I even started headbanging and playing air guitar until I came to my senses and picked up a real guitar to headbang with.
Fuck me, this is fun!
I thought this stuff had been thrown away decades ago. Considering the skipfuls of crap that I throw out every time I move house it's a miracle these have survived.
So … I don't know what you're doing with your weekends but I hope you're having as much fun as I am.
Woohoo!
With a side order of Yaay!

For me, it is books and letters. I save all of them in my attic. Occasionally, I will lift out letters from my suicidal ex, a boy who once thought that he was my soulmate or a very good friend's (Nona) recipe for "egg junk" that will bring tears to my eyes.
Yet...I keep them.
I can't wait until Thursday....
well, sugar, we are leading some sort of parallel life today! i'm taking a break from sorting through video tapes to find the LAST of three i've been ordered to produce!not fun, since this now has the entire contents of a decades worth of work scattered in my downstairs hall! at least you get to hear your former self!
upside, at 3pm, i'll stop, take a shower and walk over to the party and forget all about being a drone! xoxox
Maria: I'd dearly love to know that recipe for "egg junk".
I may well revise my plans for the next Racket and slip in something awful from the distant past. Hee hee.
Savannah: Yikes! Please don't remind me of the dozens of videos of bands I have stacked up in the attic.
I currently have no way of transferring them to DVD (without paying money, that is, and I'm a cheapskate), so I'll get these tapes out of the way first.
Enjoy the party!!!!!
xoxox
It's crappy weather, but no one can make me go up the loft. It's not safe in the first place.
So you've got loads to keep you occupied then!
See ya next Saturday!
See you at the Film Fest, Joy!
It's great going through old stuff. I almost don't dare to, because somehow suddenly tomorrow evening and i'm still sitting there in front of a pile of old photos, writings, memorabilia sighing and laughing. You suddenly look up and it's all dark around you. Time disappears into the unknown being that is probably the being in your attic. Brr. Just what IS that? You quite scared me Dive. Which isn't hard to do.
Dive - sorry...... but what the bloody hell is an attic???
PS - Bad Luck - My flight has been cancelled and I don't get out until late this afternoon - sigh - the joys of air travel!!!!
But Good Luck - I now have a few extra moments to catch up with all your posts!!!!
PS - Anything dedicated to Elder Women should be celebrated!!!
Funny. Today we(meaning Jamey only)are trying to make a hole in our stairwell upstairs to get to the attic and get a family of "Things that eat acorns and electrical wires" out of there for good! If they ate spiders we might let them stay.
What is that thing in your attic? Will it get tired of spiders some day and come for you? Eek.
Your cyber Mac band sounds very interesting btw. ;)
Lynn: How right you are. It's the following morning and I'm still sitting here surrounded by bits of the studio and lots of old tapes and photos. I'll not reclaim my dining room for a while yet.
As for the thing in the attic: I picture it as being a couple of feet across, with any number of hairy, multi-jointed legs, a sort of deflated bag of a body and a head like a cross between Helena Bonham-Carter and Gollum; all big, scary eyes and mad hair and drool.
It scuttles.
It snuffles.
It crunches and it slurps.
Luckily, it stays in the dark recesses while I am up there.
Jules: Attic means Greek, so I have a Greek person on top of my house.
As for elder women; fortunately for me, as I've grown older, older women have become attractive. Otherwise I'd be in real trouble.
Enjoy your break!
Shan: See my reply to Lynn for a description of the thing I've glimpsed in the shadows. It must also eat rats, mice and squirrels as my electrical wiring remains unmunched. Good luck with yours!
And of course, Jamey is perfect for our blogjams if he's up for it (and if we can figure a way of doing it).
Grinning like a loon and dancing around the room.
Sounds like a project for full's new camera.
OMG Dive now i'm REALLY scared. You...don't think there's one of those in ....every...attic....do you? Shiver.
The Thing That Eats Spiders???
gulp!
Kate: I rather think not! Hee hee.
Lynn and Shazza: You'll just have to go up there and find out for yourselves. If there are lots of spiders then you don't have one, but if your attic is nice and spider-free, don't go poking into any dark corners!
I want one. The thing that eats spiders. We don't have an attic but a small basement storage room. Do you think he'd like it in there?
"Robert surveyed his surroundings and wistfully wished he'd found a house with an attic. He sighed and sadly went about his task of tidying up the joint."
Well ok, it's the hot chocolate, I think.
PS Can't wait to hear more about the digitising process and hearing the results too, of course.
Mme: If it manages to find something to breed with and produces progeny, I shall mail one off to Oz as soon as I can catch it and box it up (I'll remember to put ventilation holes and a supply of spiders in there with it).
As for the digitising: I have digitised myself into a headache.
It's too addictive to stop, though.
Aspirin or Neurofen or something might help. And a glass of scotch of course unless that and so much excitement are part of the reason for the headache in which case a cup of tea and a small lie down might help. Hee hee.
Either way, Dive, that's one scary loft-journey you're proposing i take. Neeevvvvver gonna happen...
Cheese Louise! That does sound like fun. I have an LP of my middle school band playing old marches and sounded like we're playing plastic trumpets and beating on dime-store snares.
Mme: A nice bowl of miso soup and a cup of green tea have worked wonders, thank you.
Now I think I might have that scotch before I head up to bed.
Lynn: You had better go and check.
If you've not got a "Thing That Eats Spiders" up there, the spiders might multiply until there are so many of them your bedroom ceiling collapses with the weight …
Er … That's not going to give you nightmares, is it?
Hee hee hee.
Gee willikers, Robyn!
You simply MUST post that for us!
You have no excuses. Simply pop into Radio Shack and spend a couple of dollars on a lead with a pair of phono plugs at one end and a stereo mini-jack plug at the other, then connect your turntable to the mic input on your Mac.
Open Garage Band and select "New Basic Track", hit record and play the record.
Then save it as MP3 and post it on IVO.
You know you want to!!!!!!!
