I enjoyed Groover's Lyrical version of Fracas Monday Melee so much that this is now my third crack at it:
Sing along, now …
1: The Misanthropic.
(Name something - about humanity - you absolutely hate).
"Ah, mercy, mercy me,
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east.
Mercy, mercy me,
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon
our seas fish full of mercury,
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no, no.
Radiation underground and in the sky;
animals and birds who live near by are dying.
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be.
What about this over crowded land?
How much more abuse from man can she stand?"
Marvin Gaye: "Mercy, Mercy Me"
… from "What's Goin' On", the second best album ever made after Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue".
No arguments.
2: The Meretricious:
(Expose someone or something that's phony, fraudulent or bogus).
"Hoover: he was a body remover
I'll give ya a dose
But it'll never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy
Movements come and movements go
Leaders speak, movements cease
When their heads are flown
'Cause all these punks
Got bullets in their heads
Departments of police, the judges, the feds
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
You know they went after King
When he spoke out on Vietnam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot …"
Rage Against The Machine: "Wake Up."
3: The Malcontent:
(Name something you're unhappy with).
"War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me
Ohhh, war, I despise
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives
War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh
Good God, y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me
War, it ain't nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aaaaah, war-huh
Good God y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War, huh
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Listen to me"
Edwin Starr: "War"
4: The Meritorious.
(Give someone credit for something and name it if you can).
"She's a woman who understands,
She's a woman who loves her man"
The Beatles: "She's A Woman"
For my girl … yet again.
5: The Mirror.
(See something good about yourself and name it).
"Lately I find myself out gazing at stars
Hearing guitars like someone in love
Sometimes the things I do astound me
Mostly whenever you're around me
Lately I seem to walk as though I have wings
And to sing like someone in love
Each time I look at you I am light as a cloud
And feeling like someone in love
Sometimes the things I do astound me
Mostly whenever you're around me
Lately I seem to walk as though I have wings
Bump into things like someone in love
Each time I look at you I am light as a cloud
And feeling like someone in love
Like someone in love
Like someone in love"
Ella Fitzgerald (and Björk, too): "Like Someone In Love"
6: The Make-Believe:
(Name something you wish for).
"I want candy,
I want candy,
I want candy,
I want candy."
Bow Wow Wow: "I Want Candy"
Hey. Groover. Is it the Movie Melee next week?

You little Devil, Dive. I reckon you've got stars in your eyes. You little softy, you !!
I want candy.
Mercy, Mercy Me What a song, what a man. I had the privilege of seeing him live just a couple of years before he died at the Royal Albert Hall. Amazing.
Mercy, Mercy Me
Oh, Lynn, you lucky girl. I am so jealous.
My connection's not good enough for video but I hope everyone else watches it. He was truly awesome.
They can at least listen, Dive. Unfortunately there is no footage available of his performance of this song so they display a good black & white photo whilst the music plays.
Small treat for you Dive at Things UK.
Dive, you're a persistent bugger if ever I saw one. You should put a lyrics melee "belt" in your sidebar and carve a notch in it for every one that you've done...
Next week is indeed Movie Melee week. Good luck!
Oh and I'm finally getting my butt into gear on Pigs on the Wing: A Week of Pink Floyd. It's set for September 17-23. I'll do a logo soon and post it to steal...
You know, the first lyrics melee was difficult but as soon as I'd completed it a million songs popped into my head. I may just try it again to.
I've said this before, but after reading the lyrics to #5, your girlfriend is a lucky woman. I think you just pretend to be an curmudgeon, but inside you're full of sap and marshmallows. hee hee
I'm the lucky one, Robyn; believe me.
