For any Windoze users out there, the dashboard is a silly little thing on Macs that was developed so you could bring up a see-through screen that overlays your desktop and gives you useful information, such as weather forecasts, traffic reports, news feeds, stock prices, etc.
But Mac users aren't interested in all that crap; we want useless information. We want Jared, the singing smiley ("Luna Gardena …"), stupid fishtanks and bouncing rubber monkeys and interactive Klingon dictionaries and so a whole new industry was born: creating utterly and wonderfully pointless dashboard widgets.
I hadn't realised just what a teenager's floordrobe of a mess my dashboard has become until yesterday, when Amanda the new girl at the office came over to say "Woah! Cool! A dancing Jesus!"
Anyhoo.Here's my current home dashboard.
Just like judging a person by their bookshelves, we can get a pretty good idea of how dorky somebody is by the crap cluttering up their dashboard.
The thing on the top left is a feed from various telescopes around the world. For folk living under England's Tupperware skies - it is nice to see what good old Sol is up to.
My dashboard has a set of Blogville Clocks, showing me which one of you reprobates is awake or asleep and the weather in London and Ohio (Robyn) … for some strange reason you can only have two weather forecasts up at the same time, so I flick mine around Blogville to see who's suffering; in this case, our Robyn.Plus my nifty realtime earthquake reporter, so I can see how shook up poor Jules is getting in Rabaul (serves you right for living in paradise!). Click on an earthquake and it takes you to the readouts and details. Cool, if you're geeky like me.
And many thanks to Robyn for pointing me at the Etch-A-Sketch. My own miniature version of the world's first and best laptop. You actually shake it to erase the image, just like the real thing. Hee hee hee. No points for guessing the quote …
You can have any amount of comics feeds (or news feeds if you're boring). These are my defaults: Peanuts, Dilbert and Doonesbury.
I have a nifty (yet hilariously crap) Japanese translator to fuck up my homework and a wise daily saying from Family Guy.
Best of all, I have my pong clock and my hula girl. The Pong clock shows the current time as the score, but click on it and you can play fullscreen retro Pong action! Woohoo! There are any amount of stupid games you can play: Pacman, pinball, all the usuals, and they're all free, of course and one click makes the whole lot disappear and brings back your desktop for when the boss is about.
As for the hula girl (a man's GOTTA have a hula girl! She reminds me of Joe vs. The Volcano and teases me with the - admittedly remote - possibility that a young Meg Ryan might walk in and carry me off to a desert island … sigh), leave the cursor in the corner of her window and she shimmies 'til the cows come home. You can get a Hula Jesus, too, and there ain't nobody shimmies like the risen Jesus.
Old Dive is seldom happier than when all around me the office is running about like headless chickens and I'm leaning back against my lumbar support and sipping green tea, whilst my cute li'l hula girl is shimmying just for me.
At the office, I have webcams from Venice and Norwich (the American ones are dark when I'm in London), but at home it's NYC and San Francisco, looking across the bridge to Sausalito, which is somewhere I'd like to live if they could only stop those pesky earthquakes.
I also have the inevitable fishtank, a dancing Jesus and one of those plastic monkeys whose limbs are held together with string and you press the bottom and he dances and jiggles around. Anyone alive in the sixties will know what I mean.
Basically, good, old-fashioned retro childish fun for anyone who never wants to grow up.
So. What's on your dashboard? Screengrab it, post it and let's make arbitrary judgments about your character.

Gosh. As you know Dive, i don't have one, having a mere laptop. I don't know anything about Macs so when you said dashboard i was thinking cars or even the first page we come to in Blogger. It's the first i've heard of one.
Yours does look cluttered, though having something like this invites it, doesn't it. What would be my equivalent, like an electronic noticeboard? I can't quite imagine this transparent screen. Where does it come from, where does it hide when you're not using it? Hmm the photos don't really clear it up for me, wonderful as they are. Would it be the same thing as some people have soft toys, widgets and wind-up toys hanging and dangling from their pc screens?
M.B. will be able to join in better!
It just flicks up when you want it to and disappears when you get on with something else, Lynn. I have one up all the time on one of my Macs at work instead of a screensaver.
Some people use them for newsfeeds and share prices and crap like that but I just like to watch my hula girl shimmy.
It doesn't interfere with anything that your computer is doing; for instance I can be watching TV on the Mac, flick the dashboard on to check the time in Tokyo and still watch the TV through the dashboard, then flick it off again and carry on. It's kind of hard to describe to someone who hasn't got one. Hey ho.
"I'm leaning back against my lumbar support and sipping green tea, whilst my cute li'l hula girl is shimmying just for me." Now this is such a creepy image, Dive, I'm not sure what to say.
My weather is truly sucky today.
lol Scout! Taken out of context like that, it does seem so a bit lol.
Yes it must be difficult to describe. I'm still not sure if it's something built into the screen but in front of the screen or if it's a physical, perspex thingy which pops up as a sort of board in front of it. Ah well one of life's mysteries. One day perhaps when i'm all growed up i'll be able to upgrade to a Mac. Sigh.
What a busy little dashboard you have Dive - just goes to show your true character - just like a little boy with his toys, all your gadgets and widgets to play with. M.B loves his dashboard too!
I must find that webcam of San Francisco. I visited there when I was just 18 years old and then again about 7 years later. I loved Sausalito with its quaint little houses and shops. In fact, I loved San Francisco. M.B has never been there so I'll have to drag him to the US at some time in the future.
We had a 41 degree (Celsius) day today and everyone is starting to feel the stress of the heatwave. We're on track for beating the record set in 1940. It's a very pleasant 21 degrees outside now in the hills but some ten degrees hotter down in the city.
i'm still trying to figure out how to do a screengrab, sugar! btw, you can list more than 2 weather reports, i have 4 on my dashboard and a gazillion clocks!
and thanks for the good wishes! ;-) xoxox
Robyn: I'm a creepy kind of guy.
And your weather truly does suck!
Lynn: You know you are more than welcome to come round and fiddle with my Mac. Hee hee hee (sorry).
Mme: Ah, we boys and our toys!
The SF webcam is on the Apple download site and is called SanFranFogCam. It gives you several cameras to choose from.
Your weather sounds as sucky as Robyn's but at the other extreme. She's snowed under!
Savannah: "Apple/Shift/3".
Thanks for the weather news; I'll load some more up.
And you two deserve everybody's good wishes!
XOX
Guffaw, Dive. Good use of the words available he he didn't see that coming.
Ah, I love to live up to my reputation as a creepy guy!
No dashboard for me. I've got a company-owned windows laptop.
But, reading this I realized it's probably time to dust my car's dash again. Thanks for the reminder.
Do they make dancing Jesus and Hula Girls for PC's or is it just the MAC users who get to have all the fun?
I want to have a cute little hula girl shimmying too!
I'm very jealous!
Screen grab? Far beyond my megaer talents.
I'm a laptop girl so nothing more interesting than a personalised screen background, my sticky notes and a clock.
I'm a touchy feely kind of person so my toys must be tactile.
Such is the tale of the sexual floor rug I'll bring you later.
Lulu: Thanks for the reminder. Time to clean the stupid car again. Hey ho.
Shazza: It is ALWAYS Mac users who have all the fun!.
I do love my little hula girl.
Hee hee.
Kate: A sexual floor rug: That brings up images I don't really need at breakfast time!
Not messy at all. Just have a wallpaper of my baby Myko and some folders on the left, and that's it. :D

I have a Mac and didn't even know I possessed a dashboard. Shoot me now. I know how to log on, check e-mail, do some research, go to my bookmarks and write the blog. That is about it. This is pathetic, isn't it, considering that I use a Mac?
Hey...that's my weather you're looking at :)
Joy, you are too well organised!
maria: Yikes! Those are Windoze-users' reasons for having a computer. You have a Mac! you can create and have fun!
Let Liv show you how.
Oh, and the dashboard only came in on OSX.4, so if you;re still on 3 it won't be there.
Woohoo, T! You have truly sucky weather this week!
