Varifocals. Eek!

They look kinda harmless sitting there, don't they?
Ha!
Don't be fooled.
I just picked them up this morning.
Not just any old pair of glasses, but Dive's first pair of varifocals.

First off: these are a sign that my crappy eyes are getting old; and I mean upper case OLD.
And knackered.

Secondly, they're fucking trippy!
The top half of the world is pin-sharp but the bottom half is kind of "special effects" woozy, especially when I move around.
Whee!
Whoo!
But if I stick a book under 'em I can SEE IT for the first time in ages.
Cool!

So today I am staggering around like an extra from a zombie movie and blinking a lot.
I can feel the future tense of the word "headache" beginning to form.
My optician - who is a fellow guitar player - gave me the sage but not exactly helpful advice "things are gonna get trippy for a day or two."
Then he took all of my money.

Next up it'll be a zimmer frame.
Hey ho.

Addendum:
Pop on over to Betty's new blog. If anyone remembers my very first post, I commented on the wrongest song ever made (and a longstanding favourite on my iPod); Leonard Nimoy singing about Bilbo Baggins.

My comment ran:
"The Hobbit Song by Leonard Nimoy (yes, THAT Leonard Nimoy). Not currently available anywhere, as far as I know, but well worth maiming a friend for. Mad as a chocolate hat. Nimoy, what the fuck were you thinking? This is JUST PLAIN WRONG!
There's a video to go with it, too. I caught it once on late night tv and laughed so hard my dinner came out my nose."

Well Betty's just posted up the video.
Be afraid … Be very afraid.

Wear them proudly, Dive. I bet they look great--where's the photo? We'll be expecting one, of course.

Ha!
I'll post a photo next time I do anything worth photographing, Robyn … probably around 2012.

2006 was the year that I started dying (dyeing?) my hair *and* wearing comfy flat shoes. I wonder what other signs of ageing (aging?) there are?

You know I have most of them; going baldy, going deaf, failing eyesight, and most of all, making a sound like Grandpa Simpson whenever I get up.

I have heard both Leonard and William Shattner singing various songs. I had to listen, I had to!

Here we call those Bifocals. I haven't gotten there yet but I am on the way.

Dive, darlin', I bet you look smashing in your new vertigo specs. I used to have a beau who wanted me to wear my glasses all the time because I looked so smart in them. He had no idea how smart I am in or out of my specs, and he didn't last long. To his credit though, I do look like a smarty-pants in my glasses.

Specs are sexy, Fresh.

And we have bifocals, too, Prudence. They are two separate lenses. The varifocals are a sort of gradient between distance and reading so you don't get that line in the middle.
They're pretty groovy.
But not as groovy as Leonard Nimoy's singing (or Shatner's "Lucy In The Sky" for that matter).

Nothing can be worse than watching William Shatner speak/sing Rocket Man. Leonard Nimoy once visited my college. I went with some friends. He read from a truly terrible book of his own poetry and then had the audacity to make you BUY the book to get his autograph.

And I love it that you used the term "knackered." When Liv was in kindergarten, I went to pick her up and her teacher (a Brit) said, "She has been acting positively knackered all day." I thought she meant drunk.....

I have glasses just like yours. And recall walking around like I was knackered all day when I had them on....

Hee hee. Hoorah for getting old and knackered, Maria.
And that Shatner album was criminally hilarious.

dive said...

Oh, by the way: "Knackered".
In the days before cars, when horses got too old to work they were sent to the "knacker's yard" where they would be slaughtered and rendered down into glue and pet food.
Knackered is as tired as an old and worn-out horse.
Hey ho.

Sweet etymology lesson Professor Dive!

I agree Dive - i hate glassess. i got my brand new varifocals and nearly fell down the steps then accidently ran over them -twice in the car - Freudian I reckon. So I went down to the chemist and bought some magnifiers for reading and what I can't see in the mid-range I reckon isn't worth seeing!!!!

In answer to your question - Our volcano is erupting at the moment but not causing any concern. It is causing hundreds of small tremors each day but too small to notice. If you go into my other blog Rabaul Extra Photos you will see it erupting big time last year (we were ready to evacuate but it died down)
On my blog today there is a photo of the Queen in front of the volcano. She sent her love.

Cheers, Fresh.

Jules; you're so right; the middle distance sucks. Who needs it?

Your volcano is awesome. And I still can't get over your house, nestling in a paradise of palm trees on the edge of a blue sea … we only get that in brochures here. It's amazing to think you can actually LIVE there.
I am so jealous.

What's that work thingy on which your sexy new specs are resting?

That's an art pad, T.
I use it instead of a mouse. It comes with a programmeable pen and instead of having my hand cramped round a stupid mouse all day, clicking away and getting RSI, I get to move my arm and wrist around like I'm sketching with a pen on a pad. The surface of the pad represents the screen. Because I work in graphics it is so much faster and more intuitive than a mouse.
The line of things at the top of the pad is a load of programmeable soft-buttons which I have set up to allow me to do complex or repetitive operations with one touch of the pen.
The pad and pen can be set to do different things in different applications; for example in CAD or 3D programmes or in Word.
It is a wonderful thing. I have one at home, too.
Death to mice!

Hey glasses! Congrats. If I don't wear mine at night, I sometimes crash the minivan. I try to avoid this.

Nimoy sings about Hobbits?? Oh that is ironic and funny as hell. I love Leonard. I have such fond memories of him...Star Trek....In Search Of...Sigh. I'm dating myself. But my husband doesn't mind.

dive said...

Hee hee. Avoid crashing that minivan, Katherine.

No need to apologise, Kate; every episode is well worth waiting for.
