Cookies! Yay!
These are Shaker Spice Cookies and they are more addictive than crack cocaine.
As we are cooking another dish from the US of A, we shall be working once again from a recipe (as US cooking is alien to me).
This time the recipe has been provided by my girlfriend's mom (yes, as you should all have guessed by now, my girl has a "mom" rather than a "mum").
Get your pinnies on and come join us in the kitchen. Here are the ingredients we shall be using. Yay for molasses! I've never cooked with that before.
In fact I bake about as often as Halley's Comet comes around (mum is brilliant at baking so I never needed to learn), so sugar, flour, bicarb and … er … ready-ground spices are a novelty to me too.
In fact - so that I don't mess things up - I shall defer to one who knows these things well and let my lovely assistant do all the hard work in today's post, while I simply operate the camera and eat the cookies.
Here she is already hard at work. Those pretty orange measuring cups and the cute green and white measuring spoons have come all the way from the US, as I didn't have any such beasts in my menagerie.
You know me … I never measure anything. The nearest handful or "sploosh" is close enough for the kind of one pot mess cookery I do, but for baking - so I am reliably informed - quantities should be exact or the whole thing ends in tears.
So anyhoo … You'll need two bowls to start this off.
In the first bowl, combine 2 cups of plain flour, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, half a teaspoon of crushed cloves (yay me for actually doing some work … I pounded the crap out of the cloves), half a teaspoon of ginger and one teaspoon of cinnamon.
Mix all that lot together with a fork until it's well blended.
Then comes the fun … molasses! Woohoo! The word "gloop" comes to mind.
In the second bowl, we find two-thirds of a cup of sunflower oil, one cup of sugar, a quarter of a cup of molasses (yay) and an egg.
Stir all that around until it gets nice and messy …
… and then plop the flour mixture in on top of it.
This bit's fun. Make sure all of that stuff gets well blended into a great big, brown and sticky mess.
And this bit's even more fun!Rolling little poo-balls between your hands. Yummy!
They need to be about yay big (I'm still rebelling against all of this precise measuring business).
Plop 'em on a buttered baking sheet kinda like this.
We put nine on the first sheet, though that turned out to be a bit crowded so we cut it down after that.
We also patted the tops down with a fork the first time around, but later we didn't bother and they came out even nicer.
Here's another gift from across the water: an oven thermometer.I'd never needed one before but I am so glad my honeypie brought one over as it turns out my old oven runs too hot. You need to have it set at 350º, which is supposed to be gas mark 4, but it turns out that in my oven that is gas mark three and a third.
These little fellas want to be in there for ten minutes, but after five minutes you reach in and rotate the tray one-eighty degrees to make sure and get them evenly cooked.
And here they are!Utterly delicious (Phil will vouch for that), cinnamon-and-gingery Shaker Spiced Cookies!
These are completely different to what we in England know as biscuits. Our biscuits are hard and brittle and crunchy, but these US cookies are weirdly soft inside and firm on the outside.
And AMAZING fresh out of the oven!
So … After fifty years, I get to eat my first real cookie! And believe me, they are glorious. I made another batch last weekend and stuck most of them in the freezer for treats.
Enjoy!
This, by the way, is just to clear up any confusion amongst those Johnny Foreigners who asked what a "pinny" is. It is short for "pinafore", and comes in a range of fetching designs, from pictures of asparagus to Soviet slogans.Your models today are Katie and Dive.

I did not see this coming until I read your description and saw those photos, I thought "that looks like KATIE." Congratulations and thanks for finally letting us in on this secret. The cookies and you two look delish!

" . . quantities should be exact or the whole thing ends in tears." This applies to other things in life as well. ;)
Dive, you've snagged a winner! My heart's overflowing with happiness for you both. And those cookies look good too. Wow!!
Woohoo! I didn't even bother to read the comments before so I don't know if others guessed or not. But I'd know her anywhere, even from a distance. Lucky wonderful can't be better fabulous the two of youse!!!!!

Pinafore?!! I had to look it up in the dictionary. That's an apron in my world. :)
Hee, hee, hee. I just knew it!!! I knew it was Katie. Katie you little tricker. Dive, you are a lucky boy and Katie you are going to be one spoilt girl. Woohoo.
Woohoo. Gosh my gosh. I have a grin from ear to ear! And I'm sure the cookies are nice too. :)))))
I KNEW it! figured it out yesterday after looking at Katie's blog! How marvelously exciting, lovely and delicious for all y'all! Bless your hearts, y'all are two sly monkeys! xoxoxo
Crikey, (again), you two !!!
And to think that had we met Katie at the Gare du Nord last September when we were looking out for her we could have sped things up a bit.
Katie, you have extremely good taste.
Young Dive is a true gentleman tempered with a little of everything that matters in this world.
I am sure that he will keep a smile on your face and the wind astern.
Gloria in excelsis, Divo !
Hey, we made these cookies just last week, or something similar. We'll try this recipe next week.
I would pretend to be surprised by your final picture, but I actually guessed this!! Ha. You two look perfect together, and I love the pinnies. I'm glad for you.
And your mothers are emailing each other?
This just could not be any sweeter.
I am just going to admit right here and now that I thought from the SECOND that you sounded so morose when she left after her visit...that you were pining for your Katie.
And I was sitting there worrying about this, figuring that you had this unrequited love problem on your hands....
And to think that it was there ALL ALONG.
Well, boy howdy. How wonderful. I am thinking of that lovely song from Joni's Blue album....All I Want. It fits you both, yes?
He he so it's out at last. Thank goodness you let everyone know! I truly thought I was going to burst! It had got to the stage where I made myself proof read my comments not twice but thrice in case I'd left a hint behind! Phew. Can breathe again.
As this post went on, interesting though it was, I was thinking 'oh Gawd another day to keep my lips sealed' but then, the photo just appearing like that at the end was sheer brilliance Dive. Lovely surprise. How marvellous you look in your pinnies, all domestic bliss etc. Ah. It's really wonderful. I already told Katie how delighted I am so now I say to you Dive congratulations and it certainly shows in the pic how happy you are. I knew it (and said so) when you and Katie met, that you were utterly smitten. he he! Wonderful.
I posted about cookies too today, but er I didn't make mine myself... :)
Hi Katie and Dive! he he we can all say that now....... xx
So! ..... I'll go all journalist now and ask all the whens whats wheres and hows (I know the who and why)! Katie are you now living in Blighty? Are we getting any more detail or is that asking too much, being too greedy? Whaaaaaaat?...
He did go on and on about her when she visited, but now I can't find the post.
Petrea: look under Dive's label When Blogs Collide. Funny, I haven't read the stuff on the label Sexual Fantasies! ;O
Mmmmmmm cookies!
Nice pinnies you two! I love the asparagus one.
I have been smiling and hee-hawing(ooh now THAT sounds attractive) to myself since I realized your ruse! I was going right along with your "love" proclamation at first but all the while wondering why not Katie. I just haven't been able to figure out how you were going to just be friends after that last visit. I just kept thinking "But they have so much in common!"
Then came the pictures and I just said to myself. Wow, she looks like Katie's twin! Dive found another one!! And GOOD GRIEF if I didn't have to see Terroni's comment after mine to realize it actually COULD be KT herself! I forgot about her traveling tendencies and had Miss Scarlet secured away in San Fran instead of in your kitchen with a candlestick as the prime suspect! :D
I seriously don't know how you managed to trick me for so long-I am off my matchmaking game!
HA HA HA! But I am absolutely beside myself with excitement and have been riding high on the news since the other day. I just LOVE IT and can't wait to hear more.
I just want to smack your heads together you are so cute!
Oh yes. And are those cookies good or what? My recipe must have more molasses because they seem super dark brown but this is another reason I have to stay out of the kitchen. They are so addictive once you have the first taste.
I avoid cooking my favorite things so that I can hang on to what's left of my girlish figure as long as possible.
That Katie, bringing such special things over, I tell you.....sniff....it's beautiful. I can't talk about it ;).
Yay! Katie and Dive! I had a hunch, but I didn't think it was right to guess. I thought those photos looked a lot like Kate! I am so happy for both of you.
See Dive, we yanquis aren't so bad! Love to you both!
Hey, Dive, I hope that the elephant on your mantle doesn't mean you're a Republican!
OHHHH and Wow what wonderful news about you and Katie. You couldn't have found a more wonderful woman in all of blogdom or anywhere else. She brings the sun, , her wit, molasses spice cookies, and her wonderful ways to your world, too, now. In your honor tonight we had oysters on the half shell, and photographed them, too.
I agree with your mum that it is so good to get rid of that gag. We can't wait to meet you in person.
xoxox Aunt Debby
Am I missing something? I love Elephants, what have they to do with republicans?? ignorant me???
Scrivens! Who would have thought a cookie recipe would bring so many comments?
I'd better start at the top:
Cali: Hee hee. You kept our secret very well, but you can come clean now.
Trish: I can't wait to meet you, too! And Eero, of course; he's so cute!
Love to you both.
xoxo
Cali: It certainly does. It's taken me fifty years to get the quantities right, but now they are perfect.
Cynthia: I have indeed "snagged a winner"; hee hee. You know only too well just how lucky I am.
And thank YOU for the fabulous cookie recipe.
Petrea: Of course I forgot you two have met so you would have easily recognised Katie from the tantalising hints in the last post.
Trish: Thank you for the link. I couldn't get the song out of my head all day! I've also got a version of that by Art Garfunkel which is pretty good.
Ms.M. Cheers to you too. We are very happy together.
Mum: Well done for keeping shtum for so long. A heroic achievement for one so gossipy (OW)!
Vanda: Hokay, so they're kitchen aprons, too, but pinny is so much more fun to say.
Mme: Hee hee hee indeedy! I'm so glad you saw through our little game before we gave it away.
I shall do my best to spoil Katie rotten. She certainly makes me ridiculously happy.
Savannah: Sly monkeys? Hee hee hee! I am glad you approve.
xoxoxo
MB: G'day, cobber!
When you missed Katie at Gard du Nord last year she was on her way to meet me for the first time. Boy howdy, what a lot has happened since then!
We shall both be back at Gard du Nord in October for a romantic Parisian break.
Robyn: It was so spooky when Daughter No.1 came home and told you she wanted to try to bake those cookies just as we were talking about them. I know with Robyn the Master Cookie Maker to guide her they must have turned out delicious.
T: I'm glad you guessed. Yes, our moms/mums are chatting behind our backs, though mostly about gardening. Hee hee.
Maria: You know me too well. I was so desperately upset when Katie left, especially as neither of us had suspected a thing about how the other felt.
But is has all turned out perfectly.
Yay for Joni: "Alive, alive, I wanna get up and jive; I wanna wreck my stockings in some jukebox dive …"
Well perhaps not my stockings …
Lynn: Well done to you, too for an heroic and successful achievement. How you and mum kept your mouths taped shut I will never know but many thanks for doing so and helping our little game along.
You were right (of course) way back in October, even before either Katie or myself had the remotest inkling.
As for your journalist's instincts; well, some of those things might leak out over the coming months but probably not much. Suffice to say that we are enormously grateful that you persuaded Katie to take up blogging in the first place and that one day we hope to tell you that face to face.
Petrea: I did, didn't I … hee hee. The posts are way down in my sidebar under the "Katie and Dive Do London" link.
Cali: Oh, boy; you SO do not want to delve in there … at least not without rubber gloves on. Or the "Gene Puddle links". Sheesh!
Shazza: The cookies were very Mmmmmmmm …
I love the asparagus one, too!
Blogger doesn not accept comments as long as the one I am writing so I'll have to stop here and finish it in another comment. HEre goes …
Shan: Hee hee hee hee hee!
Katie told me about your email when you first realised what was going on. Hoorah for you for keeping our secret and for being so much fun.
Looking back on things it does seem pretty obvious that something was happening in October, but neither of us knew it.
I'm glad we realised at last, though of course we were the LAST people to realise!
I love your "Katie's twin" theory. That is too delicious.
And hey; if you and Jamey are thinking of a trip to San Francisco, I am planning on being there next April (to meet Cynthia … yay)!
Bring guitars.
Darn it; I can't stop smiling.
Neetzy: Hee hee … Your "I had a hunch" just reminded me of Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein; a movie I really need to watch again.
Those photos did indeed look a lot like Katie, though I tried to hide her face as much as I could.
Yanquis do seem to be increasingly endearing.
Lupine Lady: I am a republican, but not THAT sort of republican! Yikes!
Outside of your shores, republican means simply one who wishes to replace a monarchy with a republic and you know how I feel about our own parasitic monarchy.
It's odd that your far-right republican party have adopted red as their colour, where everywhere else in the world red stands for Socialism and left wing politics (yay), while blue stands for the right wing. I've never figured that one out, but I am proud to be a red and a republican in that I am a Marxist and anti-royalist. Hee hee.
You are right; I could not have found a more wonderful woman anywhere. I spent fifty years searching and eventually had to look almost six thousand miles away to find my dream girl.
Your description of Katie is perfect.
I hope you enjoy your oysters; I'm making clam chowder today and dreaming of coming over to your place to check out your seafood (and your beautiful garden).
Mum: Er … see Aunt Debby's comments above. The republican party (the US extreme right wing nutjob party) has the elephant as their emblem; while the democrats (their equivalent of our own right wing tories, though they are considered left wing in the US) have some kind of donkey.
It's a strange country but it looks as if I'm going to have to learn more about it.
I'm starting with baking cookies and chowder. Pretty good so far …
Oh my pleasure, Dive. Of course when I persuaded Katie to blog I had no idea what would happen - but I'm very glad it did! Look forward to seeing you both face to face! he he.
Okay so I'll try to rein in the questions - but it's very difficult! I'll look forward to drip, drip answers then with glee. Congratulations again! xx
You guys sure know how to get blog followers.
Lynn: Expect the first drip soon; I intend doing some posts of where we have been so you will at least discover the location of Katie's "dream house".
Petrea: if it were not for following blogs I would never have met Katie, so hoorah for Blogville!
"...neither of us had suspected a thing about how the other felt."
OH, that is so romantic! I just scrolled through the "Katie and Dive do London" posts. That's where I came in; I was following Katie's trip. You as much said you were smitten, but you could have just been being a gentleman. I didn't suspect.
For two strangers, though, you did spend a LOT of time together.
Ooh! Warm fuzzies!
Hurry up with the drip drip then. WHAT are you doing to me, you two?!
What a pleasant surprise. I have been a huge "Katie Fan" since the day I laid eyes on her. She is a fabulous person and her talents are endless. Annnnnnnnnnnnd she used to live in the home state of Bob Dylan and myself. I am truly happy for the two of you. You are both quality people and Im honored to call you blog friends. I love it when a plan comes (lol) together.
dive! i'm so thrilled for you both! i hope to meet you whenever you come out here :)
(p.s. i'm katie's friend from Santa Cruz)
Ready steady cook! Again, where are my cookies please?
Petrea: I must confess that I was re-reading those old posts yesterday, too, and realising just how much of a crush I must have had on Katie right from the first moment I clapped eyes on her. Hee hee.
Warm fuzzies indeed.
Lynn: I do love to tease!
Mark: Cheers, my friend. Now that I've applied for my passport at last I actually stand a chance of seeing Minnessota one day! Yay!
Victoria: Welcome! I'll be in California next April and I have a feeling Katie and I will be doing a whole lot of visiting folk.
Hope to see you there!
Joy: Come back from Manila and get them!
And hey! I still can't access your blogs or email you. What's going on there?
If you can endure one more comment, "Young Frankenstein" is one of my all time favorites. Was it Marty Feldman's "hunch" about Abby Normal? Heehee. You are two of my favorite bloggers. This romance is so amazing. I'm ready to write a movie script.
