I can't remember where I read this but somewhere along the way, I read that when your doorbell rings at 3 a.m., the scariest thing to see at your front door is a clown.
O.M.G. Little Timmy didn't stand a chance. Even with a crucifix hanging above the bed, the sound of his father's dancing clogs tapping on the floor attracted a strange cross-dressing clown. Dressed in a pointy hat, a ball fringe trimmed tutu, and a blinged-out pendant large enough to make a rapper blush, PoPo the Frivolous terrorized children for years with his rendition of "Buttons and Bows."
I think we all have a bit of Coulrophobia -- even if the clown is called a silly name like "Whizzo". It's regarded as a health problem in some places: http://www.insnews.org/health/focus/2006/01/clown.fear.htm
