I know I'm always the last to know about absolutely everything that goes on around me, so it comes as no surprise that I have only just discovered the Noo Yoiker's Fiction Podcasts.
Now I am a total addict.
Being temporarily partially sighted has cut down my daily reading hours so having someone read to me is great.
Go there. Listen. Enjoy.
I feel almost inspired enough to start writing short stories again. Anyone fancy joining me if I restart 500 Words (or should that be 500 Woids now it's Noo Yoiker inspired)?

Don't know if I will listen to the pods. For some reason, unless I am on a road trip, I can't just listen to a book. Though admittedly listening to a book read by someone with a thick NY accent would be entertaining even if the book were terrible.
That's a cool link. Although I don't have as much time to listen as I do to read. But I might give some of them a try.
I'd be a reader if you start the 500 Woids again. You chose some great "jump off points" for people to write from, and some excellent stories came out of them.
Oh Gawd! I so don't have the time, but I miss 'em 500 Words.
Katherine, those New Yorker podcasts are amazing (and reasonably short enough to listen to while doing a chore or two). I stared with Anne Enright reading my favourite John Cheever short story, "The Swimmer" and was immediately hooked. Nabokov, Chandler, Borges, the list of authors is awesome.
Ms.M, I shall search for more short story inspiration in the hope of restarting 500 Words. Today, however, I have been sitting in front of the TV traumatised by the images coming from Japan. Luckily all the people I know there have called in safe but right now, writing is pretty far from my mind.

I caught once someone reading a story while listening to public radio through itunes. I was doing something on the computer at the time - obviously not something with words. It was a parody of French cuisine. The narrator went on and on describing the most convoluted recipe ever. It was hilarious. Unfortunately I forgot the title.
Sounds fun, Vanda. I am not a fan of radio that talks a lot but those short stories are just the right length for listening to while cooking dinner.
Dive, I certainly understand. A catastrophic event. The videos and photos I've seen are terrifying! I hope your friends there are safe and have access to shelter, food, water, and whatever they may need to make it through.
All my friends are safe, Ms.M, though Anna is quite near the Fukushima nuclear exclusion zone. Regrettably, nine members of Maiko's husband's family are missing in Miyagi Prefecture. All we can do is wait for news.
I did a 500 words X 2 this morning. See? You already kicked my fiction butt.

Didn't get to click on the Noo Yoiker yet, but I shall! I did like the 500 words even though I did not participate for long. Perhaps you should do it for a few weeks at a time? It was a great creative exercise.
I am greatly saddened by the disaster in Japan and have hope you hear from your friends soon.
