Friday Morning Wood

Disco!

Haddiscoe, that is …

I designed the new Haddiscoe Hall a few years back and it became known in the orifice as "Disco Hall".

This is Haddiscoe St.Mary's south door, visible from the Hall.

Take a close look; that blacksmith was trippin' balls!

This is a surviving Saxo-Norman door from pre-1100 CE.

When the Normans first invaded they embarked on a crazy castle, cathedral and church building campaign and used the Anglo Saxon craftsmen already living here, hence the twirly, Norse and Celtic influences found on these rare, very early doors.

Spiffy, huh?

And a splendid weekend to you, too, Savannah. xoxo

Pea, you can hear it whenever you drive through the village.

This one sent me down a rabbit hole! I wanted to find a photo of the Hall you designed (no luck), and even used Google maps to "drive" around the village to find it. No luck again. I must say, though, the British are the most amazing drivers. It's not just the fact that you drive on the other side of the road, and it's not even the fact that those roads are too skinny for two cars to pass each other. The thing that impresses me is the high grasses and plantings on either side so you can't see what's coming around the bend! And yet I'm quite sure you have fewer accidents there, driving blind on the wrong side of the road, than we do here in the US on our freeways.

Hi, Petrea. I'm sending a Googlemap thing showing the hall (labelled as Hall Farm with a pointer over Kevin's barn - the Hall is at the top right of the group of buildings but I designed the whole lot).
Gina and Kevin are intensely private people so you won't find photos of the hall anywhere except on my computer.
Over here in Norfolk, if you don't drive carefully you end up wrapped around a tree or smeared over a tractor.

I don't want to invade anyone's privacy!
For a while, Google maps had a picture of my husband on the front porch in his bathrobe.

I keep imagining a Norman lord, sitting at his banquet hall table with his friends, mug o' mead in hand, telling them how he's "got a guy" who's just a "fookin' genius" with iron and who's gonna make him a door like no door that's ever been seen. And that door is gonna have strapping that looks like cornstalks. "The stalks will lay in all four directions, with what looks like their roots meeting in the middle, like a, like a love knot. And it's all be gonna made out of iron! I tell ya bro, the guy's a genius!"

I tried finding the Hall, too. No success.

Hahahaha, Petrea that is too funny!

Speedway, that's pretty much how I talk to the Blacksmith on the Castle job.
I'll probably post some pics of bits of the hall when I get back to the orifice next week.
