Mum: Yes, it's snowing and thawing at the same time, weirdly. I've just been out shovelling and sweeping the driveway clear so I am now going to collapse into a nice hot bath.

Careful in clearing your path (oh but I've cleared mine too of course) as you can be sued if someone falls over, claiming you haven't done it properly! Crazy Britain once again. Insane stuff. It's what is stopping lots of people doing so and thereby improving the situ for all of us, and also offering to clear for elderly neighbours. What a poor state our once great country is in.

I've not cleared the footpath, just my driveway, though it wasn't much use as it's blizzarding again this morning and the driveway is already an inch deep again. Hey ho.

Today was 38 degree's C.
In other words even my eyeballs were sweating.
It's all of 2˚F at the moment here in Ohio, but when it warms up, I'll go out and take some snow photos to match yours.
I agree with Lynn that it's gorgeous, but I'm sorry you have to commute in it.

Cynthia: Apologies for the sweary post, but this weather brings out the profanity (especially in my elderly neighbour).
Climate change seems to have given us in England wetter winters and stormier summers, but this is an el niño year, so all bets are off.
What lovely photos, Dive, and a nice follow-up to our etymology lesson from the other day.
I wonder if this will convince our legislators to create change? Will it convince us to recycle? Drive less? Vote for environmental issues? I imagine we'll all just complain more.
Petrea: Hee hee, Well, having described the etymology of the word I thought I might as well get some use from it.
As for climate change, I recycle, take the train to work, always vote Green and I'm really mean with my energy use but for me nothing really hits the spot like good old-fashioned complaining. I've spent 51 years perfecting my grouchiness.

Don't hold back -- tell us what you really think of winter and snow! Hee hee. Your photos are giving me flashbacks to my Minnesota winters. Brrrr! Try to be more like Fern and just enjoy it! Well, I can actually sympathize about what a drag it is to drive in weather like this, as I'm also having flashbacks to when I was driving on the highway in MN in my Comet and spun on some ice and did 3 complete turns and ended up in a snowbank on the side of the highway. Thankfully I didn't hit any other cars. Be careful driving to & from the train!

Katie: Yikes! Yes, Minnesota is a serious place to live in the winter. I must confess I love watching Fargo on really hot days in the summer as it makes me shiver with cold, but no way am I going to watch it in this weather.
We call that snow of yours a "light dusting." I have close to 25 inches in my yard. Low temp yesterday was -17 F. I could use a little spring weather too. Bring it on.
Ah, Minnesota in January: probably the only thing on earth that could make Florida look attractive.

It has been between below zero and thirty here for more than a week. Everyone in my house and parts of my extended family are sick. I feel a cold coming on, now. I'm the last to come down with one. Thought I had eluded it, but alas...

The third to the last line of your post is an excellent example of the use of rhythm and percussive sounds in poetry. In fact, the last three lines could be a sort of modern day Haiku. ;)

I guess it must be difficult trying to commute in that but on the other hand, I'd give just about anything for a romp in that snow right now. By romp I mean building a snowman or something :)

I tried romping in the snow once. Our arses went numb and took forever to warm back up.
I've just spent seventeen hours at work on the worst bastard arse shift I've had in a long time. I was at an open cut mine, with fuck all breeze, a huge expanse of surfaces for the sun to reflect off, and pretty obviously no trees. Fourty-seven degrees celcius of bastard hot, add a full body sperm suit and then shovel grease out of a confined space all day. And then times it by working eight days straight doing the same thing.
Give me your snow. Please.
