I'm off to watch Doctor Strangelove and The Bed-Sitting Room again. I kinda miss the ol' Cold War, with the going to bed every night not knowing if the world would still be there in the morning. It would be nice, therefore, if my bloody government would declassify this stuff so I can re-live the romance of those deliciously uncertain times.
But they won't … the gits.

I kinda miss waiting for the four minute warning when school lessons got boring.
We had a lovely walk through the cornfields one day when my father taught us the fastest route home from school, in case of bombing. And the bomb shelter in the basement was a great fort to play in.
Petrea, Abe Books just sent me a lovely 1950 first edition of "Atomic Bombing: How To Protect Yourself" which is so like playing Fallout 4 on the PS4 that it is spooky. The book itself is utterly hilarious and I hope to follow its advice to the letter when somebody gets around to pushing the button.
"Hilarious" is a good word for taking cover under your school desk when the nuclear bombs start to fall.
"Duck and cover"!
In "Atomic Bombing: How to Protect Yourself" they advise that "if you see the flash of an atomic detonation, find a wall to hide behind" … and then "go home and take a long shower; this will remove most of the radiation".
It also tells you to visit your doctor and that essential services such as transport will still be running.
1950 must have been fun.
I wasn't there, but I can tell you 1962 was weird in good old Illinois, USA.
I think we're heading into a poo-storm of weirdness in the next couple of years. It's almost refreshing … in a terrifying way.
John says it won't happen. Just in case, I'm reading up on the best countries to retire to.
