I merely added the captions to the ones I've been posting of late from the British Library's online collection of old illustrations, but some of them need no captions as they are mad enough in themselves.
I'll have two-shillingsworth of whatever Holmes used to stop his high wind troubling him.
And here's something for the ladies. We gentlemen - and apparently "the whole polite world" - would prefer it if this year you crushed your ribcages and rearranged your internal organs with the apparatus below.
One wonders who Dorothy might have been and what she had done to deserve that.

Maybe if poor Dorothy had two-shillingsworth of whatever Holmes had, it would have saved her from that torture device.

You're right, Petrea: it does seem like they're made to order. I've deliberately avoided the more racist and sexist illustrations, but they show just how far we've come in the past 150 years. Still a long way to go but it's nice to be reminded that we're nicer people than we once were.
Yes, and I suppose they were nicer people than those of the 17th century. We have to look at them as if from their time.
