Hee hee hee hee hee … etc. This is just too funny not to post. It's a link to I Framed Roger Rabbit's blog and it made me laugh so much I nearly threw up.
I know. I laughed out loud at the super hero with the "run in her stockings."
The only thing is that I own (with my husband) the publishing company that published God's Smuggler many years ago, and I didn't have the heart to tell Taihae. I didn't want to ruin her fun. Everybody has a right to their opinion about things, anyway.
Wow! Your own publishing company. As a fanatical ( to an absurd degree) book collector, I am most jealous.
As for God's Smuggler: we may snigger at how po-faced it seems now, but I remember my old friend Andy managing to sneak two bibles - and several pairs of Levis - in to what was then Soviet Moscow on holiday in the late seventies. Unfortunatly, the only person he could give them to was his Intourist guide, who must have made a capitalist mint off well-intentioned westerners.
If there are any old copies of G.S. hanging around, it may be nice to post bits of them for us old comic fans. Just to remind us of what the cold war was actually like.
Snigger is a good word for it. I'm pretty God's Smuggler is based on the true story of a guy who smuggled hundreds of Bibles into the Soviet Union, and people couldn't get enough of them--partly for money and partyly because they were spiritually starving.
We also did Archie comics with kind of a Christian bent--one of the old Archie artists was a good friend of the guy we bought our company from.
Also, an absurdly fanatical book collector, I bet you've got something to say about altered books. Haver you seen them? I've just discovered the whole idea, and it makes me sad but because of some odd compulsion I feel I must try desicrating an old crappy book just once.
Witness the massive resurgence of Russian Orthodoxy after perestroika (and on a down side, the unfortunate influx of hordes of US evangelists). The Russians never lost their spirituality, even under Stalin.
As for altered books. I love collage, and some of the results are quite wonderful (was it you who pointed me at http://inkytinker.blogspot.com/)? But I am so protective of my books, I would never do it myself.
I've not lent a book out in decades, as they all came back with split spines and got pretty wrecked. My mum's family are all in publishing and her dad beat into me the correct way to open a book the first time, and how to look after them for a lifetime.
