Sheesh! It's been hanging there in my sidebar for months (even longer than I've been suffering blogger's block), but at last, the splendidly literate Altadena Hiker (hi, Karin) of Petrea's Pasadena (and thereabouts) Posse has solved the Sidebar Quote Quiz.
Yes, "A way a lone a lost a last a loved a long the riverrun …" is indeed Joyce, being the end and beginning of the everly oroborosness that is Finnegans Wake (no apostrophe).
So now I'd better set another one …

Victor Hugo, Les Miserables, Chapter IV, description of M Mabeuf.
P.S. I found the entire chapter on-line listed as Volume III,Book Fifth, The Excellence of Misfortune.
Sheesh, and here I was, thinkin' I might want to read it. Good grief.
Sheesh, I never saw it there. It wouldn't have mattered.
Speedway, you simply MUST read it.
"To err is human; to stroll: Parisian."
The joy of Hugo is his digressions; ninety pages on the history of a nunnery; whole chapters on Waterloo; glorious walks through the filth of Paris; the elephant! Every word is a joy. He is the most delightful of companions.
I just re-read Toilers of the Sea and the opening chapters (almost a book's worth for any other writer) are just a digression about the Channel Isles (it's days of reading before you meet any characters) but every sentence is so beautifully written it grips and enchants. Give him a try.
It's about to change again, Petrea. I was tempted to put in a Casey quote but thought that would be too cheeky.
Oh, and no using the interweb next time; let's have some stab in the dark guesses if you don't know it already. Those are such fun.
I don't know who wrote the quote, but it very much describes someone I live with. :)
Ha ha I thought ti was you!
I have been remiss with blog reading and now, you have a sidebar quiz??? Well, la, di, dah, sugar! ;) xoxoxo
I, too live with one of those, Ms.M. He appears in the mirror with lots more books each week, darn it.
Close enough, mum.
I've been remiss about just about everything, Savannah, including updating my sidebar quote quiz (doh)
