WTF MONDAY - Guest Comestible from the U S of A

The Interweb can be a scary place, filled with horrifying images, deliberately harmful content and comedy cat videos.

This disturbing image had me cowering behind the sofa, whimpering with terror at the realisation that the oddball inhabitants of our Lost Colonies have weaponised that most sacred of foods and marketed it as a "GREAT GIFT IDEA!"

I looked this stuff up … it's bacon grease, scraped from the bottom of the pan. Yup, bacon grease. Their website makes no bones about it: "Real Bacon Grease, Ready To Use", "Authentic Bacon Grease", with recipes and testimonials. Nine-pound tubs of it! Nine POUNDS of bacon grease! Like they say, a "GREAT GIFT IDEA!" And a free spoon in the tub!

They also have a "What Shouldn't I Do With BaconUp?" page, including the perhaps wise advice not to add it to coffee. "DO NOT Overheat, DO NOT Leave Unattended, DO NOT add back into the container, NEVER pour in trash, NEVER pour down drain, NEVER add water."

This stuff is a WMD!

So why, Why WHY do I want to crack open a tub and spoon it down my gullet, making gronf, gronf, gronf noises?

This product shocks me. But why doesn't it shock me that this is an American product?

Something tells me that this culinary delight comes from somewhere far, far inland and nowhere near the West Coast, Petrea.

I miss the early wild west days (for us) of the internet, when people emailed each other bunches of funny pictures and the web seemed to consist of fuglies, cats in boxes and horribly-designed websites with guestbooks to sign and links pages. I'm glad that there's still dreadful content to be found in the dark corners.

I am very curious about this. Everyone knows that lard makes the very best roast potatoes which everyone knows is the tastiest food ever (One of William Gibson's books has a fictional restaurant chain which simply sells roast potatoes on a paper plate. I wish such a place existed. Any entrepreneur can have that suggestion for free.)

I don't know how different Bacon Up is from lard (maybe with your butchery background you're the person to tell me. Or maybe it's one of those things that it's best not to know). I haven't tried making roasties with bacon fat, so I don't know how that goes, but one thing someone did show me is when you've fried bacon (and I guess this applies to real bacon, not the supermarket stuff that's 95% water) soak up the stuff with a round of bread and grill it. So tasty!
